The starting pitchers for tonight's Braves-Mets game are John Smoltz and Tommy Glavine.
As the legendary Gorilla Monsoon said when The Macho Man and The Lovely Elizabeth reunited in the ring at Wrestlemania VII: "Not a dry eye in the house, folks!"
Some of you might not understand, but when I saw this matchup in our schedule a few days ago, it felt like time had stopped. I mean..... I knew it hadn't, but at that moment, nothing else in the world mattered.
(Inside joke that only El gets.)
I never know how to feel when Glavine pitches against us. It's kind of like when Gary Payton plays against the Sonics, only worse, because I've always felt a hell of a lot more appreciation and loyalty for Glavine after he led us to a title in 1995. Watching his performance in Game 6 of the '95 Series -- with my cousin John at the Red Robin in the Cerritos Mall (bottomless fries!) -- is one of my favorite sports memories.
You already know what a kick to the nuts it was for me the day he signed with the Mets. Imagine your favorite player, the guy who basically made you a fan of the team you now root for, moving over to the team you hate the most. It's unimaginable. The worst feeling in the world. Tommy Glavine -- pitching his home games in the House That Kranepool Built? You might as well tell me there is no god, or that Clark and Lana are never going to get together.
Anyways, it's a big day. So emotional. Lots of emotions.
(Another inside joke that only El gets.)
