The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
I've been saying that to myself over and over again for the last couple of hours or so. It really kinda just makes you smile.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Ha!
Man. That's freakin awesome. The great thing about it is it doesn't make any sense. Anaheim's not even in Los Angeles County. Everyone who lives in southern California knows this. It'd be like calling the Oakland A's "the San Francisco A's of Oakland," or the New Jersey Nets "the New York Nets of New Jersey," or Domino's "Zachary's Pizza of Domino's." They're two different places.
The press release introducing the name change apparently explains it by saying "Los Angeles" refers to "the Los Angeles region, which is comprised of Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties."
So all this time, and I lived in southern California for over 15 years, I've never known such a thing existed, at least not for reals, like in geography books or whatever. I mean, the Los Angeles region. That's not a real thing, is it?
I know a lot of us tell East Coasters we're from Los Angeles when they ask us what city we're from, but that's only because we don't wanna go through the trouble of explaining where Cerritos is, or where Torrance is, or where Fullerton is. It's a non-Californian-friendly response.
It's also lazy.
So..... I figure maybe the Angels are just getting lazy, too. Maybe they just got tired of explaining to people where the city of Anaheim is. Maybe saying "Los Angeles," plain and simple, is just much easier for them.
Hence,
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Woo-Hoo!!!!!
By the way, translated, the Los Angeles Angels is The The Angels Angels.
The fun just doesn't stop in Anaheim! I mean Los Angeles.
