Raise your hand if you thought Steve Javie overreacted when he ejected Paul Pierce in Thursday's Celtics-Pacers game.
I actually didn't have a problem with it, since it's not like a referee can just ignore what Pierce did to Jamal Tinsley. But I have to say, Javie being involved in yet another ejection is probably among the least surprising occurrences in the 21st century.
This NBA blogger who calls himself "The Stats Pimp" did this quick study where he counted up the number of ejections made by each referee from the 2001-02 season through the 2003-04 season, and he found that the average is one ejection every 12.3 games. The referee who had by far the most ejections was Steve Javie -- 31 in 215 games, or an average of one ejection every 6.9 games.
Maybe Javie happened to officiate all of the Trail Blazers (Rasheed Wallace) or Pacers (Ron Artest) games or something, so the average is a little misleading. I don't know. I just know that whenever I see him officiating a nationally televised game, it looks like he's having the worst day of his life, and he takes it out on the players if they so much as groan or look at him.
I think he's nuts. And I'm not just saying that because I think he looks like the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer.
