I don't know if this is funny or depressing. You decide for yourself.

During yesterday's telecast of the Astros/Padres game on ESPN, I caught Tony Gwynn, who was in the booth as an analyst, saying something along the lines of this:

"I remember watching Roger go through his pre-game drills when we played the Yankees in the '98 World Series, and I was just amazed at how intense he was."

Roger, in this case, is Roger Clemens, who was on the mound last night as the Astros' starter.

Great story, right? Sure it is. But there's a slight problem. Roger Clemens wasn't a member of the Yankees in 1998 -- he was on the Blue Jays. So unless Tony Gwynn had a telescope in the Padres dugout and liked to spy on Clemens in between innings, Gwynn was pulling this story out of his big bee-hind.

I guess even the best people in the world are capable of doing that once in awhile.
